Grade 1 Teachers

Candace McGinty

Web page

This is Candace's 7th year of teaching.  Candace received her Bachelor's of Science in Education from Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas.  Candace taught third grade in Clyde, Texas and later moved to Aurora, Colorado to first, second, and third grades for four years. In 1993, Candace had her first child and decided to be a stay-at-home mom.

In 2009 Candace became relicensed and started substitute teaching for some extra income.  What began as a small extra income became a passion again.  The kids were a breath of fresh air to her and a way to make a difference to a new generation.   Candace has been substituting at Ben Franklin for three years and truly loves the students and families at BFA.  She is also heavily invested in Core Knowledge curriculum, given that her own two children attended a Core Knowledge charter school.   She has recently started her studies for her Master's of Education in Reading at Regis University.

Candace lives in Highlands Ranch with her husband Scott of 25 years and a cute wiener dog named Wilson.  She has a son, Preston, at Colorado State University, a daughter, Monica, at Pepperdine University in California.  She enjoys cooking, reading and crafting in her spare time.

Candace is very excited to be part of the BFA community and can't wait to meet her new class of first graders!

Theresa is a native California girl who LOVES the beach.  She moved to Colorado 13 years ago and although she misses the ocean, she loves all the hiking, bike paths and serenity Colorado has to offer.

She got her BA in Liberal Arts at Dominguez Hills University in CA. Her first teaching job was just a few blocks from the beach!! She has been an educator for 17 years.  For the last 12 years she has been teaching Kindergarten at Trailblazer Elementary in Douglas County and is very excited about the opportunity to become a part of the Ben Franklin family.

Theresa lives in Highlands Ranch with her husband and three children ages 17, 15 and 9.  She loves to hang out with friends and family in her free times and is a big fan of the BRONCOS!!  Her daughter Jenna will be joining BFA as well and it will be the first time she has taught at a school that one of her children have attended.  They are both looking forward to being at the same school and on the same schedule.

Theresa and her family are more than enthusiastic about beginning a new chapter in their lives with BFA!

Julie DePasse

Web page

Julie DePasse is excited to be a part of BFA’s first grade team! She began her career in 1989 after graduating from Metropolitan State College of Denver. She taught at the first grade level in Littleton Public Schools for three years before deciding to be a full time mom for a while. When she went back to work, she taught at Monument Academy Charter School and her kids attended there as well. This was her introduction to the Core Knowledge Sequence, and she was hooked!  Now back in the Denver area, she is excited to be teaching in a Core Knowledge school again where the curriculum is packed full of interesting subjects to study including lots of history and science!

Julie grew up in Littleton, where she discovered her love of reading and learning. She believes that reading helps people see the world from a whole different window! Today, she is still a member of a book club, where she relishes the lively discussions! She hopes to share her love of reading and learning with her students. In addition to books, she loves watching movies and traveling with her husband and two sons. Her favorite trips have been to Europe, especially Scotland and Ireland. She enjoys church activities and her big, silly dog, Buster, who takes her for walks on the Highline Canal Trail… whenever he gets the chance.

Julie looks forward to collaborating with you in hopes that this school year at BFA will be electrifying! GO LIGHTNING BOLTS!
