5th Grade Teachers
Mrs. Dunn is very excited to return for her first full year at Ben Franklin Academy. When an opportunity came for her husband to relocate from Utah last year, they seized it. As a result, she came to BFA mid-year and quickly fell in love with the school, it's programs, students and families, and the area.
She comes from a charter school background- having been involved in them since her son (now a 7th grader) started kindergarten- and teaching in them ever since! She loves the breadth and scope of the Core Knowledge Sequence, and after having previously taught in Utah's largest (and poorest) school district- cannot say enough good things about parent and community-centered education!
Mrs. Dunn is a wife and mother of four children; three of whom attend BFA, and one who attends Mountain Vista High School. She met her husband in 1993 at Brigham Young University-Provo, and they've been on a roller coaster ride ever since! They're family motto is "keep moving forward," and she takes that to heart- especially with respect to her students. She is committed to making sure that every student moves forward, irrespective of where they are when they begin with her.
Mrs. Dunn had an atypical childhood, which gives her great compassion for and understanding of the varied needs of children. She's been in special education AND gifted/talented programs. She's competed nationally AND been completely immobilized by injury. She had attended 8 different schools by the 10th grade- in 5 cities and three states- having experienced the entire gamut of educational policies, practices, theories and curriculum firsthand. She's been a minority, lived overseas, speaks 2 languages, can read a third, and through it all- she loves people and especially children!
Today, Mrs. Dunn's outside interests include choral performance & conducting, scouting "mom" and merit badge counselor, hiking and biking, volleyball, soccer mom, and reading children's literature. She is also working on her Master's degree at DU in Curriculum and Instruction.
Kevin is excited to begin his fourth year of teaching. He joined BFA as a second career teacher, having spent the past several years in business. He looks forward to providing the education, leadership, and guidance to assist with each student’s present and future success. Kevin is also the boy's soccer coach and the girl's and boy’s basketball coach.
Kevin graduated from Colorado State University and later earned his master’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Phoenix.
Another Colorado native, Kevin lives with his wonderful wife, Sarah, and daughters, Chloe (age 5), Carly (age 4), and Charlotte (10 months) in Parker. Kevin looks forward to another great year at BFA.
Craig Macias is a Colorado native and will never leave this beautiful state. He grew up in the Littleton area and graduated from Colorado State University (Go Rams!) with a degree in Human Development and Family Studies and a concentration in Elementary Education. Craig currently lives in Highlands Ranch with his loving wife and two fantastic children, ages 10 and 7. He has a true passion for sports and enjoys playing golf, tennis and skiing with friends and family. Craig has coached youth football as well as a nationally ranked baseball team for the last five years. This is Craig's third year teaching at Ben Franklin Academy and loves every minute of it. His professional background was primarily in the financial and banking industry and as a third year teacher is following his heart to education and giving back the way he has always wanted. Craig has a real zeal for life and shows enthusiasm in everything he is involved in.
Melinda Walter is very excited to teach 5th grade this year. She has been teaching 2nd grade for the last four years at Ben Franklin Academy. She is looking forward for the new adventure she is sure 5th grade with provide.
Melinda has also pursued her own education. She has obtained her bachelor’s degree in Child Development, completed a teaching credential program, and earned a master’s degree in Education with an emphasis in Reading Development.
Melinda is also excited and a little sad about her son Mason, who will be starting 1st grade this year at BFA. Melinda spends most of her free time reading, shopping, and enjoying outings with her two men, Mr. Walter and Mason.
