I hope everyone is enjoying their summer! I can’t believe that school starts in less than a month. Summer is flying right by, but it has been so good to relax and recharge. I wanted to provide a couple of updates and some reminders of upcoming events in the next few weeks.
I know there has been much media coverage over the last few days surrounding the CDC and the American Association of Pediatrics making recommendations for universal masking policies in schools. There is not currently a mask mandate in Colorado. After much discussion, we have decided to maintain what we announced earlier in the summer. We highly recommend masks for students and staff members who are not vaccinated, but we will not require masks to be worn by anyone. If the county or the state were to put a mask mandate back in place, we would adhere to those mandates.
There are several reasons for this decision. We have other mitigation strategies that help decrease the spread of COVID and other germs. These include asking parents to pre-screen their students for symptoms before sending them to school, deep cleaning classrooms and other areas, increased ventilation, and filtering of classroom air. Douglas County also has a high vaccination rate and continues to see low case counts, even as other areas are experiencing increases.
I have also received several questions about Critical Race Theory and whether we will be changing our current curriculum. We do not plan on changing our curriculum at this time.
I’d like to make sure everyone is aware of a few events coming up. The first is an orientation for new families. On August 12, from 6 to 7 pm, we will meet in the gym to provide an overview of a few things and then take a school tour.
On August 16, the school will be open from 4-5:30 pm for families to come and meet the teachers. From 5:30-7 pm, the Back to School picnic will take place here at the school. I know the CEC committee has some fun things planned. We will have more details soon!
On August 17, from 8-10 am, we will host a Middle School orientation for all 6th graders and new 7th and 8th graders.
Don’t forget to check your parent portal on August 2 for teacher assignments and middle school schedules.
May your last few weeks of summer be filled with sunshine, friends, and family! As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please email me.
