Ideal relationship between the BFA Board and BFA Community:
Board members represent the BFA Community – that’s the relationship! They don’t represent their own agenda or views, but those of the community. The BFA Board should act as representatives of the Community in every way possible. They should regularly meet with BFA stakeholders to understand the needs and desires of all parties. Listening should be one of their most important attributes followed by courageously standing up for the values wherewith BFA was founded upon.
What are the current challenges facing charter school boards?
Charter school boards face the unique challenge of ensuring that the founding principles and values upon which the school was created are being followed and taught in the classroom, regardless of any outside voices that are pressuring change. Teachers must be held accountable by school administrators, and in turn, those administrators are to be held accountable by the Board. The unique involvement of parents should never be taken for granted and the Board must stand firm in supporting their help to ensure the founding principles and values remain the foundation of the culture.
What motivated you to accept the nomination for a seat on the BFA Board?
My motivation to be on the board comes from my passion to ensure my children’s education, and likewise your children’s, remains grounded in the BFA mission and values. Perhaps, like you, we picked BFA for our children because we saw an environment that was (mostly) free from political and social influences where our kids could have a great experience getting an education, learning how to work hard, and making friends. I am motivated to keep that ideal a reality for the indefinite future.
Aspirations while being on the Board:
As a board member, first and foremost, I believe I represent that BFA community. As such, I hope to meet with parents, teachers, students and any stakeholder to listen and be their voice in critical decisions that will affect the school. I hope the BFA Board will strive for greatness and always ensure the mission of the school is being followed by those who administer and teach and to always listen to the parents.
Moment we knew BFA was the school for our family:
I am a product of Littleton Public Schools. I attended Eugene Field Elementary and Euclid Middle School in the 90’s. The great experiences I had at those schools stemmed from the values that were grounded in the school’s culture, that were foundational to the educational experience. I knew BFA was right for our family because the parents and faculty believe in, and strive to ensure, the mission and values of the school are placed above the personal agendas of any one teacher or administrator. As a board member, my focus will be to maintain those values.
